36 websites used for online credit card, banking fraud shut down
LONDON - The UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) together with the FBI, the US Department of Justice and Australian authorities has swung into action to close down of 36 website domains which were being used to trade credit card and online bank details, and stolen credit cards.
The international cooperation focused on tackling online fraud has resulted in tracking down 36 sites that were using e-commerce platforms known as Automated Vending Carts (AVCs) for quick shifting of dodgy data, according to the SOCA.
The websites sold stolen payment cards and online bank accounts, with the criminals using the same retail systems legitimate stores use in order "to sell large quantities of stolen data quickly and easily", the SOCA stated.
The domains that were seized belonged to criminals in various countries in Europe, Australia and the US.
So far two men suspected including a website owner have been arrested for buying data in bulk with the intention of selling it on. More arrests are expected in the near future as the data of the seized computers are analysed.
SOCA said the action was part of an ongoing campaign that has so far saved 500 million pounds in potential fraud losses.
"The domains were seized and at the same time computers were seized and we'll be going through that data and repatriating card and account details with banks so they can put a stop on the cards," a SOCA spokesperson said.
Over the last two years over 2.5 million items of compromised personal and financial information has been recovered.
Stated Lee Miles, Head of Cyber Operations for SOCA, "Our activities have saved business, online retailers and financial institutions potential fraud losses estimated at more than half a billion pounds, and at the same time protected thousands of individuals from the distress caused by being a victim of fraud or identity crime."
