Manila News.Net
Friday 9th January, 2009

In the US state of Michigan, unemployment benefits are now running in the hundreds of thousands.

State employment officers say they are handling 10,000 calls a day from unemployed workers, causing the state to open seven new claims processing offices.

The state has also added a new computer server to deal with the multiple callers.

The state unemployment rate, which is the highest in the country, is at 9.6 percent.
