Fire races through Karachi slum

Manila News.Net
Friday 9th January, 2009

At least 38 people, including children and women, have been burnt to death in a Pakistani slum fire.

The fire engulfed a slum area in Karachi, where bodies were later found in huts that were made of bamboos and sticks.

Police in Karachi have said more deaths are feared from almost 50 other injured people who have been admitted to various hospitals.

The fire started late Thursday when food was being cooked in a hut.

Many residents were asleep in adjoining huts and couldn’t be roused when the alarm was first raised.

The slum area was covered from three sides, with the only way out also catching fire.
