P Sensex closed 27 points lower at 35,871 while the Nifty 50 closed barely 1.8 points up at 10,792.
Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, JSW Steel, Vedanta, and Yes Bank were the top gainers while Reliance Industries, GAIL, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, and Cipla were the top losers on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Kotak Mahindra Bank slipped in a block deal after reports that ING would be selling its stake in the bank.
Shares of Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management surged in intra-day trade after Reliance Capital decided to put its stake in the company up for Nippon Life Insurance Company.
Meanwhile, Asian markets slipped amid deteriorating global economic outlook.
