CITY OF SANTA ROSA, Laguna, July 15 (PIA) - The City Government of Santa Rosa hosted the National Nutrition Month Activation launch at the Santa Rosa Multi-Purpose Complex last July 1.

Together with the Department of Health (DOH) and National Nutrition Council (NNC), the city government, gathered DOH employees, health workers and select students to promote practice of a healthy lifestyle.

This year's theme, "Kumain ng Wasto at Maging Aktibo, Push Natin 'To!"urges Filipinos to advocate for and realize the importance of a healthy diet, increased physical activity, and reduced sedentary behavior. The theme emphasizes inclusivity wherein each one can contribute to better health and nutrition in the community.

"Sa tamang nutrition apektado ang lahat, ang isip at pangangatawan and here in the city of Santa Rosa one of the most important resource po namin ay ang taong bayan, kaya pinangangalagaan namin ng tama mag mula pa lamang sa tiyan, sa panganganak at (hanggang) sa paglaki ng bata, " Santa Rosa City Nutrition Committee Chair, Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas said.

(Good nutrition affects everything including the mind and body and here in the City of Sta. Rosa one of our most important resources are our citizens this is why we care for them as early as they are in their mother's womb until the child grows up.)

The Chief Executive said the city had consistently been a Nutrition Honor Awardee for its effort to prioritize the health and nutrition in every village through the hardworking contribution of their Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Health Workers (BHW).

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) encourages people to eat healthy and be more active to prevent obesity and non-communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Based on reports, the increasing problem of overweight and obesity can be attributed to poor diet and inadequate physical activity. While, more Filipinos are consuming diets that are energy-dense, high in fat and simple sugars, and less of fruits and vegetables.

With this, NNC incites the food industry including farmers, manufacturers, distributors and food establishments to produce and make available healthier food options including food products that have lower sugar, salt and fat content, and instead make foods such as fruits and vegetables more accessible.

Government units, schools, workplaces and public establishments are also called to employ physical activities to their stakeholders like employees and students, among many others.

In the message, Health Secretary Francisco Duque, commended the City of Santa Rosa for setting an example among local government units in providing an enabling environment for physical activities for its constituents.

"I encourage all local government units to implement the priority actions of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition of our country," Sec. Duque said.

Also part of the program were simultaneous Physical Activities like Fun Bike led by Sta. Rosa City Sports Development Office, Fun Run/ Walk led by Kabalikat Civicom, Traditional Children Games led by NNC, Zumba and Taichi led by Ms. Regine Tolentino and Coach Julius Miko.
