MAASIN CITY, July 19 (PIA) -- More than a thousand Maasinhons availed of the services brought by the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) during the service caravan conducted Thursday, July 18, at the city gymnasium here.

Lawyer Ferdinand Iman, PCUP's chief of operations for the Visayas, said the service caravan aims to reach out and fast-track the delivery of services to the people especially the disadvantaged sector in the country.

"It is also aimed to improve coordination and monitoring for the speedy implementation of government programs and policies for the urban poor," Iman said.

The PCUP undertaking in Maasin City offered services such as medical and dental services and consultations through the Department of Health, in coordination with the local health office; the Commission on Human Rights and Public Attorney's Office for free legal consultations; civil registration of the Philippine Statistics Authority and the local registrar's office; vehicle registration and information purposes of the Land Transportation Office.

Among other agencies that participated in the one-day activity include the Department of Trade and Industry for livelihood orientation; Department of Agriculture; Department of Social Welfare and Development for the senior citizens, solo parents and persons with disabilities' application and registration; the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration; and the Department of Labor and Employment for job hiring.

Social Security System and PhilHealth also participated the activity and received clients during the service caravan.

Iman disclosed that there were 20 employers who participated -- 16 for the local employment and four for overseas employment.

"As for the medical/dental services, seven medical practitioners were present and four dentists who provided their free services with free medicines through the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation," Iman further said.

"Maasin City is the third area visited by the PCUP in the region, first was in Calbayog City in Samar, followed in Naval, Biliran," he said.

The PCUP's service caravan, in coordination with the city government of Maasin and the Province of Southern Leyte, carries the theme "Pinagsama-samang Serbisyo, Para sa Tao." (LDL/RGC/PIA-8, Southern Leyte)
