CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug. 22 (PIA) -- One hundred eighty Government Internship Program (GIP) beneficiaries chosen as enumerators for the profiling of child laborers in Northern Mindanao participated in the capacity development (CAPDEV) training conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-10).
The GIPs came from the six provinces of the region: 48 from Bukidnon, 13 from Camiguin, 32 from Lanao del Norte, 18 from Misamis Occidental, 40 from Misamis Oriental, and 26 from Cagayan de Oro City including three assigned at the regional office.
CAPDEV aims to capacitate the enumerators on their roles in the profiling of child laborers (CLs), increase their awareness on anti-child labor laws, and learn best practices in conducting interviews with families of working children.
Regional Community Facilitator Hannah Jemimah C. Navarro discussed the global, national, and Regional CL perspective emphasizing statistics and the identified industry groups involving hazardous works engaged by children below 18 years old, including trends and causes.
Anti-child labor laws and policies were also presented.
The enumerators were also oriented on the different tools for profiling and given data gathering tips.
DOLE Cagayan de Oro City Field Unit Chief Ebba B. Acosta advised the GIPs to be keen observers during the conduct of their profiling. "You will not be in the field to assess but to determine the needs of the children. In that way, we at DOLE would know how we can extend our help to them," she said.
Earlier this year, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-10 provided DOLE-10 the "Listahanan" containing the names and number of working children in the region for a speedy action mechanism in detecting, monitoring, and rescuing CLs in hazardous and exploitative working conditions necessary for enforcement.
The profiling is in line with the advocacy of the government to eliminate all forms of CL activities with the hope to provide information on the names, addresses and specific needs as a basis for the provision of appropriate services and interventions necessary to remove them from engaging CL activities.
DOLE serves as the lead agency in the implementation of the Philippine Program Against Child Labor, which seeks to eliminate child labor. (DOLE-10/PIA10)
