DOLORES, Abra, Sept. 16 (PIA) -- Voluntary blood donation is being pushed in the municipality in continuing efforts to inform and motivate people of sharing their blood to save lives and to contribute to the attainment of adequate blood supply in the province.

The municipal government recently hosted a blood donation drive at the Civic Center in Barangay Poblacion which collected 24 units of blood from 33 volunteer donors coming from the different barangays.

The bloodletting activity was undertaken with Philippine Red Cross (PRC)-Abra chapter, the Provincial Health Office, the Provincial Department of Health Office and Abra Dental Association.

To ensure that they are fit to participate in the activity, the volunteer donors undergo screening process where their health condition is carefully examined by health professionals. A donor must have normal blood pressure, pulse rate, body weight and hemoglobin level to pass the screening proper.

The amount of blood that is taken depends primarily on the donor's body weight and must not exceed 450 ml.

Experts recognize that "voluntary non-remunerated blood donors are the foundation of a safe, sustainable blood supply."

PRC-Abra administrator Ivy Venus Avendano said blood is regularly needed by patients undergoing dialysis aside from cancer patients and victims of accidents or emergencies.

Dolores Mayor Conde Turqueza requested the conduct of said activity to contribute to the attainment of adequate blood supply in the province.

The MLGU hopes to achieve the national target of one percent from the total population of the municipality as it sets to conduct another bloodletting in December. (JDP/CAGT-PIA CAR, Abra)
