BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Sept. 21 (PIA) - The provincial government here recently handed fund assistance to the National Food Authority (NFA) to enable them to buy more rice supply from farmers in the province.

The move is part of the provincial government's interventions in the wake of the implementation of the Rice Tariffication law in the country which affected the farming industry.

Governor Carlos Padilla said the assistance will be used to pay rentals of additional rice warehouses and wages of guards so that the NFA will have stockpiling areas for their continuing procurement of rice from the province's farmers.

Earlier, Engineer Corazon Pangan, NFA provincial chief said they have stopped their rice procurement program due to the full capacity of their warehouses.

"Opening up additional rice warehouses will help our farmers in selling their products through the NFA. We are also encouraging our fellow Novo Vizcayanos to patrionize our rice products to help our farmers," Padilla said.

The Rice Tariffication Law supposedly ensures food security by liberalizing rice imports and making farming globally competitive.

However, Filipino farmers see it as a threat to their livelihood.(MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
