ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov 15 (PIA) - Residents will now enjoy more free 24/7 wifi sites in the city as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) launched 3 more hotspots here yesterday (November 14).
Launched yesterday were the wifi sites in Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA). The ZIA is the first airport to have free unlimited wifi access from the DICT in the country.
Zamboanga City now has a total of 7 free wifi sites located at the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), Zamboanga Ferry Terminal, City Health Office (CHO) at the DICT and those mentioned above, all with speeds of up to 30Mbps.
DICT Assistant Secretary Felino O. Castro V, in charge of the National Broadband Backbone and Free Wifi/Internet Access in Public Areas said the Free Wifi project may be utilized by the masses for education, economic and communications purposes.
According to DICT briefer, the free wifi "aims to empower the Filipino people digitally by tapping existing technology and ensuring that the benefits to be derived from these advancements are available to everyone. Internet access, after all, should not be a privilege enjoyed by few but a right enjoyed by all".
By 2020, the DICT would have put up 104,867 wifi sites all over the country. These hotspots will be in government offices, public schools, universities and colleges, government hospitals, parks, plazas, airports, seaports, transport terminals and other areas of mass convergence.
