New and unique local product
A social enterprise that transformed environmental pest into local goods is one of the exhibitor at the Metro Fiesta 2019.
"The Jacinto & Lirio (company name) which stands for 'hyacinth' and 'lily' since our main products are made from water hyacinth and water lily." Nico Ocampo, a company associate explained.
The water hyacinth is considered as the most damaging aquatic plant that can severely pester the lakes and rivers in the Philippines. It can reproduce and spread rapidly which can cause problems like clogged waterways and increased pollution.
"Nagkakaroon ng problema sa water hyacinth kasi pest siya sa river at nadadamage niya yung diversity ng mga animals like fishes doon kaya naisip namin na ang best way para matugunan. " Ocampo added.
Ocampo said, the Jacinto & Lirio enterprise saw the potential of making something out the environmental causing problem by creating handmade vegan leather products out of water hyacinth.
"Our mission is to empower affected families by the water hyacinth infestation problem through livelihood generation," a statement that can be found at the Jacinto & Lirio website.
Mini journals, planners, and ID wallets are among the vegan leather product being sold at the exhibit.
"For every purchase of Jacinto & Lirio product, we contribute to the community development of our partners so they can keep transforming their families and their communities for the better," another statement at the Jacinto & Lirio website.
Empowering the MSMEs in NCR
Around 120 Micro Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) participate in this year's Metro Fiesta including those who have been assisted and benefitted from the various programs of the DTI-NCR like One Town, One Product, a program to develop and promote products rooted in its own local culture, and Kapatid Mentor Me, a weekly mentoring program by business owners and practitioners for MSMEs held in Negosyo Centers nationwide.
Seminars on product development, business management, and others were among the support given by DTI to scale up these businesses.
"We are inviting everyone, even those that are not from Metro Manila, to visit and buy products at the Metro Fiesta Trade and Exhibits. It will help empower MSMEs to level up their products not only to sell goods but also to inspire them to innovate their products." Alcantara said.
