ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec 5 (PIA) - Representatives from the local sectors of the city voiced out their concern for society to brace for the effects of climate change and be prepared.

Interreligious Solidarity for Peace (ISP) Muslim convenor Prof. Ali Yacub, Al Haj said that the effects of the climate change all over the world is being felt, and that it has become something short of a "climate crisis".

"The country, for one is experiencing all sorts of natural disasters such as typhoons and floods," Yacub said, adding that these are manifestations of the changing climate. This happens not only in the Philippines, but is experienced all over the world, he said.

"We must be prepared. With fervent prayers we hope to be spared from these disasters, but we must act (to be resilient)," Yacub said. "The mistakes and negligence of the past must not be repeated."

Mindanao Week of Peace was celebrated from November 27 to December 4. The theme for this year's celebration is Environmental Care and Resilience to Climate Change Action for Peace.

Coupled with the advocacy for climate change adaptation and mitigation, the representatives all the while call for the persistent promotion of peace in Mindanao.

Col. Antonio John Divinagracia, Joint Task Force Zamboanga commander shared his experience as a soldier.

"As a lieutenant early in my military career, I experienced first-hand how conflict and violence affected communities. As soldiers, we experienced many sad situations. As soldiers, we are the first ones who desire for peace," Divinagracia said.

He shared that peace efforts have made former enemies into friends.

"We are grateful for the peace advocacies. Now, I have seen former enemies who returned to the folds of the law living productive lives. Let us continue the advocacy for peace. But peace must start within ourselves first," Divinagracia added.

On December 4, the celebrations formally closed with a Peace Musical Festival at the KCC Mall de Zamboanga. The night was filled with peace-themed musical and cultural performances.

Divinagracia reiterated that residents must continue the advocacies of the week of peace all throughout the year. (RVC/DIS/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
