MAASIN CITY, Dec. 15 (PIA) -- For three straight days, Dec. 12 to 15, over three thousand elderlies in this city got a feel of merry Christmas as personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development regional office disbursed social pension funds in coordination with the city social welfare office.
Each one received P6,000 representing the 12 months' lump-sum subsidy for the year 2019, at P500 per month, the pay-out held at Barangay Dongon, an interior barangay of the city, about seven kilometers from the city proper.
The city gym was occupied, so in looking for available venue the gymnasium of Barangay Dongon was chosen because of its accessible comfort rooms, said Fe Samaco, CSWDO personnel.
The Dongon gym was crowded as the seniors filled the spaces, lining up for verification of names at the payroll for an average of two hours before finally reaching the table for releasing the money.
Police personnel, city traffic enforcers, and even some emergency first-aid medics of the provincial disaster risk reduction team were on hand for assistance and for any eventualities, but so far none had happened as of this reporting.
Salvador Valderz, focal person for senior citizens at the CSWDO, said the number of listed individuals for the social pension program of the national government totaled 5,832 covering the 70 barangays of Maasin City.
For this three-day pay-out, however, 3,173 individuals were listed to get their shares, while the rest will follow soonest as soon as all the papers shall have been fully liquidated, Valdez told the Philippine Information Agency - Southern Leyte. (LDL/MMP/PIA-8/PIA-8, Southern Leyte)
