DAVAO CITY, January 16 (PIA) - According to Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Deputy Executive Director Asst. Secretary Romeo Montenegro, the Davao-Manado air route by Garuda Indonesia is doing good business with high passenger capacity, particularly on Manado to Davao flight.
"Based on the data we gathered from Garuda and based on actual interviews with visitors we had in the last few days, we validated from them that we had full flights especially Manado to Davao," Montenegro said.
Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi Province in Indonesia.
"Many were interested in going to Davao and Davao to Manado, a big part of the load came from Luzon who have family or businesses in Manado," he added.
Montenegro said these are the kind of scenarios they wanted to sustain. With the expected entry of PAL Express by March of this year, it will further increase the flights between the two cities.
"We could be seeing daily flights between Manado and Davao," Montenegro said.
Garuda which started its Davao-Manado flight on September 27, 2019 flies between the two cities twice a week (Mondays and Fridays) using ATR 72-600 aircraft.
The Garuda connection rejuvenated the dormant air route which were once serviced by Indonesian airline companies Bouraq (2002-2004), Merpati Nusantara and Sriwijaya in 2006.
The high load of the Davao-Manado routes could be sustained by complementary activities such as promoting tourism and economic activities across both areas.
For tourism, Montenegro said that the two cities have both alluring destinations which are worth exploring. He cited the importance of media and the bloggers in spreading information across the two sister cities. (PIA/RG Alama)
