BANGUED,Abra, Mar. 24(PIA)-- The provincial and municipal government units of Abra bought the vegetable produce of farmers in their localities for distribution to households in the province affected by the ongoing enhanced community quarantiine(ECQ) over Luzon in a bid to curb the spread of the corona virus disease or COVID-19 .
Governor Jocelyn Bernos said the vegetables are sorted and distributed to those in need of food while waiting for relief goods from the national government. This is a way for LGUs to help the farmers who have hard time selling their produce during the ECQ where movements of people including transportation are restricted. She added that by buying the local produce , exposure of farmers to the public or crowd will be lessened.
Moreover, the vegetables such as eggplants and tomatoes are better option because of the health benefits like great source of vitamins and minerals to bolster immune system to fight off viruses.
Bernos thanked the local chief executives and other officials in the province for supporting the initiative of the provincial government in buying the produce of their farmers. She also encouraged other LGUS to also look into the possibility of buying the products of local farmers at this uncertain time. (JDP/RMC-PIA-CAR)
