MANILA, May 31 -- The Philippine National Railways (PNR) said that it is ready to resume operations tomorrow, 01 June 2020, the start of the implementation of the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) in Metro Manila and most areas of the country.

Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade said that while the PNR is ready and able to serve, it will serve with limited capacity.

"The resumption of transportation entails a calculated, gradual, and partial approach.

For his part, PNR General Manager Junn Magno said that starting tomorrow, PNR will deploy eight (8) trains to service passengers, six (6) of which are the newly-acquired Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) from Indonesia, while the other two (2) are existing DMU trains. There will be a total of 28 train cars for revenue operations.

The 6 trains will be used for the routes from Governor Pascual to Bicutan, Tutuban to Alabang, and Tutuban to Calamba.

The procurement of the new DMU trains is among the projects of this Administration which not only impacts on the capacity of train service of PNR but also on the riding comfort and safety culture of loyal passengers.

The DMU trains have PVC seats capable of disinfection as compared to other train models which have fabric seats and other materials. It also makes trips safer and smoother since these trains have a driving engine on each car-end, thereby making it easier to make turns after every trip. The 6 units of DMU were procured in 2018 and were delivered in 2019 and earlier this year 2020.

All PNR trains were marked with stickers where passengers may sit or stand to be able to observe social distancing. Markers were also prepared inside the trains and various frequented areas where passengers may stand or sit.
