SORSOGON CITY, June 30, 2020 (PIA) - Since the onset of the Luzon-wide Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) implemented in Sorsogon province last March and now under the Modified General Community Quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic, the sweeper team of the provincial government of Sorsogon had already fetched more or less three thousand (3,000) locally stranded individuals (LSIs) from the national capital region (NCR).
Most of the rescued individuals are laid off workers due to temporary closures of their companies where they are working on a "no work no pay policy", while some are stranded students who can't find any means of transportation in Metro Manila due to the implemented lockdown.
These Sorsoganons fetched thru sweeper team were all tested negative of COVID-19. According to Sorsogon Governor Francis Joseph "Chiz" Escudero, he assured the public that none of the beneficiaries of the sweeper team were found positive of COVID-19 as validated by the Sorsogon Provincial Health Office.
Escudero also contradicted the notion that the new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sorsogon is due to the sweeper team initiated by the province to fetch stranded Sorsoganons in Metro Manila.
Sorsogon, as of this writing, has recorded four COVID-19 positive cases with one recovered, two active cases and one death.
The province of Sorsogon has started its sweeper team initiative last week of March this year to rescue the 58 locally stranded Sorsoganons at the border checkpoint of Del Gallego, Camarines Sur. These stranded Sorsoganons forced themselves to travel from NCR to Bicol region by foot due to absence of public transport system since ECQ was declared on March 17, 2020.
Headed by Atty. Cesar Balmaceda, the sweeper team continued to fetch stranded Sorsoganons who cried for rescue due to food and financial constraints they experience while locked down in Metro Manila, back to the province.
Escudero said further that the provincial government of Sorsogon will continue to mobilize its sweeper team whenever it is necessary to help stranded Sorsoganons to go back to their province while there is no public transport available yet from NCR to Sorsogon.
As of June 30, 2020, the governor said there is no available schedule for the sweeper team to fetch new LSIs for Sorsogon. (MBA-PIAV/Sorsogon)
