DAVAO CITY, July 1 (PIA) - Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Cagas dedicated the celebration of the 53rd Araw ng Davao del Sur today to all frontline workers in the province, whom he said are considered heroes in the fight against COVID-19.

Cagas thanked the frontliners for their devotion, time and strength in helping the government in the efforts to prevent the entry and spread of the virus in the province.

In his message during a simple and short anniversary celebration at the lobby of the capitol building located in Barangay Matti, Digos City, the governor recognized and paid tribute to the frontline workers.

He said that at least 750 volunteers and frontliners have been in the frontline risking their lives to extend assistance, to continue providing services and to ensure that quarantine guidelines are strictly implemented.

Apart from the medical health workers such as doctors, nurses and medical technologists in the provincial hospital, provincial/city/municipal health offices, Cagas also recognized the surveillance and contact tracing teams, ambulance drivers, janitors and security guards, and among others.

"We don't limit our frontliners to medical health workers, but also all those who helped in preventing the entry and spread of the infection," he stated.

He also thanked the officials and personnel of the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Bureau of Fire, for "protecting us closely by enforcing laws and protocols."

The Governor also cited the relief goods packing and distribution teams and volunteers which were headed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.

He said these were the teams who facilitated the distribution of more than 59,000 food packs to affected families in all 232 barangays in the province.

"Kini sila walay puas sa pag gahin sa panahon ug kusog, risgo sa kinabuhi, pag sakay og dump truck... ilalom sa kainit sa adlaw ug ulan, ngadto sa paghatod sa mga relief goods sa mga balay balay (They relentlessly took time, exerted efforts, risked their lives, they rode in dump trucks... under the heat of the sun and rain, to deliver relief goods in the communities)," Cagas stated.

The provincial local government was able to extend food packs all over the province in three waves.

The Governor also thanked the provincial LGU's department offices, national government agencies and Senator Bong Go for their assistance to the province.

Cagas said that the unity and team work that the government, frontliners and volunteers have shown has greatly contributed for the province to strongly defeat COVID-19.

As of this writing, the province has recorded 21 COVID-19 cases from Digos City (10 cases) and municipalities of Bansalan (1), Hagonoy (2), Magsaysay (2), Malalag (1), Matanao (1), Sta. Cruz (3) and Sulop (1).

Of the total cases, 16 have recovered, while five cases are still active.

Cagas said that the cases were not severe, but he still conveyed a reminder for people to continue practicing the basic health protocols on hand washing, social distancing and wearing of face masks. (PIA-XI/Carina L. Cayon)
