SAN FERNANDO CITY, Sept. 15 (PIA) -- Qualified public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in Ilocos Region have started receiving cash subsidy under the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) of the government.
Darwin Chan, regional information officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 1, said there are 7,903 driver-beneficiaries in the region as endorsed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
Most of the recipients are from Pangasinan with 3,722; La Union with 1,901; Ilocos Norte with 1,589; and Ilocos Sur with 691.
"From Aug. 22 to Sept. 12, a total of 485 beneficiaries received their cash assistance," Chan said.
He added, "Each eligible beneficiary received Php5,500.00 which is based on the regional minimum wage."
So far, 327 recipients are from Ilocos Norte, 86 from La Union, and 72 from Ilocos Sur.
Earlier, Lawyer Anabel Nullar-Marzan, LTFRB-1 chief transportation development officer, said to qualify for the said assistance, the driver or any of his or her family members should not have received any subsidy from other government agencies.
"Ang layunin nito ay para naman hindi madoble ang kanilang mga benepisyo at para lahat ng nangangailangan ay mabigyan ng ayuda," Marzan told the Philippine Information Agency.
The cash subsidies of the drivers were distributed through the digital scheme with DSWD's partner-Financial Service Providers as well as through branches of Land Bank of the Philippines.
At present, the total amount paid to drivers in the region is at PhP2,667,500.00. (JCR/JPD, PIA La Union)
