SOLANA, Cagayan, Feb. 24 (PIA) - - The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has launched the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP) convergence program in Cagayan Valley region.
Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya said the program is a key strategy of the national government in addressing critical concerns on hunger mitigation, food and nutrition insecurity, and poverty reduction.
He said a memorandum of understanding has been signed by national government agencies that were identified part of the convergence initiative with anti-poverty programs to include the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology, National Food Authority, Landbank of the Philippines, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation.
"We will implement programs that will help our farmers and fisherfolk increase their productivity and capacitate them in order to regain from their losses," Visaya said.
He also stressed that the mission of EPAHP is to implement programs with the end view of eradicating hunger and poverty by 2030.
"NIA will contribute to this through continuous construction and rehabilitation of irrigation facilities, likewise, the agency is inclined to realize the goals of the program through the help of the Irrigators Associations," Visaya added.
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexi Nograles, chairperson of the EPAHP, NIA Board and Task Force on Zero Hunger, urged the partner agencies under the convergence initiative to develop poverty alleviation programs that will likewise increase income of the farmers and ensure food security.
"We will also help our farmers offer and market their produce for the feeding programs of the DSWD, the health care facilities, jail facilities and other institutional buyers," Nograles said.
He also said EPAHP aims to further enhance the sustainability of the program policies, engagement of the private sector and institutionalization of mechanisms in the Local Government Units that would allow adoption of the convergence program. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
