ILIGAN CITY, May 13 (PIA)--After intensifying the push in diminishing the existing positive cases of tuberculosis (TB) in the city, a total of 2,966 Iliganons benefited from the Access TB Program that lasted for 16 days.
The program was spearheaded by the local government of Iligan through its City Health Office (CHO) and the Maranao People Development Center, Inc. (MARADECA) in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) from April 16 to May 7 of this year wherein medical services were brought to various barangays in the city to identify and give treatment to TB-positive patients.
The program targets to cover 30 barangays and 2,500 Iliganons who belong to vulnerable populations such as senior citizens, and sikad and motorcycle drivers.
Of the 2,966 beneficiaries, 233 tested positive of the treatable lung disease.
MARADECA Humanitarian Response Team Leader Nashifa Macarimbang Bitiara said that behind this intensive initiative is their goal of detecting TB-positive cases and bringing in immediate treatments.
"Ginawa po namin ito para mapalapit sa mga taong malayo sa siyudad para makita natin kung positive sila o hindi sa TB at para in case kung may positive, madecrease natin ang cases, magamot iyong mga positive at para maiwasang makahawa sa mga tao," she said.
[We are doing this to come to people who are far from the city and see if they are positive or not of TB and if in case there are positive, we will be able to decrease the cases, treat the positive and avoid transmission to other people.]
Meanwhile, Dr. Ardel Castaneda-Padayhag, CHO National TB Control Program Medical Coordinator, reiterated her call to the public to immediately seek medical consultation to the nearest barangay health center if TB symptoms persist.
"Magdasig lang gyud ta pag-ayo kay para [Let us be really alert because] when we our responsible to ourselves, that is also one way of helping our family and other community members. Kung naay gibati sama sa sintomas sa tuberculosis, pakonsulta na dayon mo [When you feel something like symptoms of tuberculosis, seek consultation directly]. You can go to the nearest health centers. Anyways, Iligan has 44 barangays. All barangays have health centers. They can go there," she firmly stated.
TB symptoms may show as a cough that lasts for two weeks, back pain, loss of appetite, and fever during nighttime.
At the moment, an advisory was already issued stating that citizens who partook in the said program can now get their actual chest X-ray reading results from their respective barangay health centers.
Further, they are requested to proceed to Xpert MTB/RIF testing or sputum exam by visiting the nearest barangay health center or CHO's TB DOTS After 5 Hub which is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Undertaking citizens are urged not to worry as all medications are free and costless. (CRG/ PIA-ICIC)
