BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia confirmed 8,554 new COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 4,940,245, the official monitoring and response center said Sunday.

The national COVID-19 death toll rose by 391 to 115,871 in the past day, while the number of the country's recoveries grew by 8,573 to 4,556,073.

TBILISI -- Georgia on Sunday reported 968 new COVID-19 cases, taking its total to 330,375, according to the country's National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC).

Data from the NCDC showed that 903 more patients have recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 308,821.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 3,780 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Sunday, bringing the national total to 470,110.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that two of the new cases are imported and 3,778 being local transmissions.

KABUL -- A total of 114 new COVID-19 positive cases have been registered in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of patients infected with the disease to 63,598, the ministry of Public Health said in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, three more patients have died due to the disease over the period, totaling the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 2,745 since the outbreak of the disease in February 2020 in Afghanistan.

MANILA -- The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported on Sunday 5,790 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,143,963.

The death toll climbed to 19,191 after 140 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

NEW DELHI -- The ongoing COVID-19 lockdown in India's New Delhi has been extended by a week further till May 24, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Sunday.

Kejriwal told the media that COVID-19 cases are showing a downward trend in Delhi and people were recovering from the infection.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported 127 new COVID-19 cases from 6 p.m. local time Saturday to 6 a.m. local time Sunday, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 4,112, according to its Ministry of Health.

They are all locally transmitted cases detected in lockdown areas and quarantine facilities in northern localities, including 98 in Bac Giang province, 23 in Bac Ninh province, five in Dien Bien province and one in Hoa Binh province.
