MARAWI CITY, May 17 (PIA)--The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) kicked off today a two-day agriculture skills training for inmates at Lanao del Sur Provincial Jail in line with the observance of Marawi Week of Peace.

The intervention is a collaborative effort between TESDA-Lanao del Sur, TESDA-Lanao del Norte and their farm field schools, and is expected to run from May 17 until May 18 of this year, targeting 135 inmates, 117 of which are male while 18 are female.

TESDA-Lanao del Norte Provincial Director Noralaine Rasul shared that the training aims to teach inmates the proper way of planting vegetations, including the preparation of land and production of the needed fertilizers to boost productivity and pave way for opportunities and jobs when they are over with their sentence soon.

She also stated that such training was given as this was requested by its beneficiaries so that they may be able to address food security and sustainability among themselves.

Meanwhile, Acting Provincial Jail Warden Wardia Usman extended her gratitude to TESDA for not forgetting the sector of persons deprived of liberty through conducting the said training to the province's inmates.

Detainees in the area also expressed their joy for the imparted knowledge in agriculture.

"Pinapasalamatan namin ang mga trainer namin, ang TESDA, itong Provincial Jail at TFBM kasi nakarating po sila dito para turuan kami magtanim ng gulay," said alyas Daday.

[We are thanking our trainers, the TESDA, this Provincial Jail and TFBM because they reached this area to teach us how to plant vegetables.]

They then stressed that such intervention is significant as this will be beneficial when they acquire their freedom anew.

"Kailangan namin matunan ito kay para kung makalabas na kami, may hanapbuhay na kami, mabaligya namo nga makatabang sa among kabuhian, para sa among anak," alyas Fely conveyed.

[We need to learn this so that when we can already go out, we will already have a livelihood, we will be able to sell which can help in our living, for our children.]

Apart from the agriculture skills training, TESDA also distributed vegetable seeds and face masks to inmates. (CRG/ PIA-ICIC)
