ZAMBOANGA CITY - A sexagenarian perished while her elder sister was injured in a 45-minute fire that razed a two-story house and partially destroyed another in this city, a Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) official disclosed Friday.
Chief Insp. Jacqueline Ortega, city fire district marshal, identified the fatality as Clarita Co, 66; and her injured sister as Teresita, 70.
Ortega said the fire that reached the first alarm broke out around 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Quidilla Drive in Barangay Camino Nuevo, this city.
Ortega said that Clarita, who was bedridden, perished as her relatives failed to evacuate her amid the blaze that engulfed their house.
Teresita, on the other hand, suffered first-degree burns in the back and was rushed to the hospital.
Ortega said the fire, which originated from a faulty electrical connection, started on the second floor of a house being rented out by Helen Co, a relative of the victims.
The fire razed the two-story house occupied by the victims and partially destroyed an adjacent two-story house.
Ortega said the conflagration displaced four families and destroyed some PHP200,000 worth of properties.
The fire marshal advised residents to periodically check their electrical installations to prevent a short circuit that could trigger a fire. (PNA)
