ILOILO CITY - The implementation of granular lockdowns in selected areas of Iloilo City will help arrest the rising cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Granular lockdown has been imposed in selected areas from the city's 17 barangays with two or more Covid-19 cases, said Jeck Conlu, spokesperson for the Iloilo City Covid team, in an interview on Wednesday.

"It is possible that the number will increase if there are local transmissions. The areas, sitio (zones), compound or houses are locked down while we are conducting contact tracing, swabbing and isolation," he said.

He said the move is necessary so that once they found out that there is local transmission then the area can be isolated immediately.

The barangays in this city with locked down areas until January 20 are Calumpang, San Juan, North Baluarte, San Jose, Sto. Nino, Norte, San Roque, MH Del Pilar, Our Lady of Lourdes, Lanit, Nabitasan,Aguinaldo, Loboc, Sinikway, Baybay Tanza and Nonoy Sto. Rosario.

The city government on January 14 placed on lockdown selected areas in Barangays Tanza, Zamora-Melliza, and Veterans Village and was already lifted on January 17.

Conlu said Iloilo City is now experiencing its highest cases this month since the pandemic broke out.

The city recorded its highest cases so far on Tuesday with 371 total cases.

As of noon Wednesday, the city government has initially recorded 183 confirmed cases.

In a press conference on Monday, Iloilo City Covid-19 focal person Dr. Roland Jay Fortuna said as per contract tracing, the hike in cases could be attributed to gatherings last December and those who traveled outside of the city during the holidays.

Data from the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) showed that as of Jan. 18, Iloilo City has 1,965 active cases, 21, 316 recoveries, and 629 deaths. (PNA)
