KATHMANDU, Nepal The Chinese ambassador to Nepal has criticized US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
According to Ambassador Hou Yanqi, the trip severely violates the one-China policy and the political foundation of China-US relations.
Yanqi said in a statement on Wednesday that "[the visit] seriously violates China's sovereignty and territorial integrity." It seriously jeopardizes the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. China strongly opposes and condemns this, and has taken serious steps and expressed strong protest to the United States."
Despite Beijing's warnings, Pelosi arrived in Taipei late Tuesday on a closely watched trip.
Yanqi said in Kathmandu that because Speaker Pelosi is the current leader of the US Congress, her visit to and activities in Taiwan, in whatever form and for whatever reason, are a major political provocation to improve US-Taiwan relations.
"China does not accept this, and the Chinese people do not accept this," Hou added. "There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of it."
