MANILA - A total of 21 health facilities nationwide were damaged by Typhoon Karding's onslaught over the weekend, a health official said Tuesday.

In a media briefing, Department of Health (DOH) officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said the reported damage were minor and no Covid-19 vaccines were destroyed by the typhoon.

"Mayroong tumulo ang bubong, mayroong natuklap 'yung bubong, mayroong 'yung mga parte ng mga facilities natin ay nabaha, so, these are the things na nakita natin (There were leaking roofs, damaged roofs, parts of facilities were flooded, so, these are the things we've seen) based on our assessment," she said.

"But there were no disruptions of services just to be very clear on that," Vergeire said.

She did not identify the areas where the damaged facilities are located.

The DOH has coordinated with concerned agencies and local government units for the repair of the damaged facilities.

On Monday, the DOH held a meeting with the regional directors of Centers for Health about the prevention of certain diseases due to the typhoon.

"We have instructed all of them na lahat po ng lumusong sa baha ay kailangan mabigyan ng prophylactic na medicines kung saan libre po itong binibigay sa ating mga health centers (that all who walked in the flood must be given prophylactic medicines which are given free of charge in our health centers)," she said.

Vergeire also urged those who crossed floods to go to the nearest health centers for assessment and receive treatment to avoid leptospirosis. (PNA)
