MANILA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Philippines on Thursday advised Filipinos to avoid unnecessary travel to Iraq "due to the prevailing security situation in the region."

In an advisory, the Philippine Embassy in Iraq also urged Filipinos already in Iraq to avoid public places, exercise extreme caution, and stay vigilant for their safety and security.

"Monitor reliable news sources," read the advisory posted on social media.

Iraq remains at alert level 3 status, meaning "voluntary repatriation phase."

The embassy did not give details on the current security risks. However, foreign media warned of possible "military action" by Israel against Iran, signaling rising tensions in the Middle East.
