1 killed, 10 injured in jeepney, tanker truck collision in Philippines

MANILA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A fuel tanker truck collided with a passenger jeepney in Batangas province, south of Manila, on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring 10 others, the local police said.

The police said the crash, which happened along a highway early Wednesday morning, pinned the jeepney driver and critically wounded some of the passengers.

Initial investigation showed that the truck was swerving to the opposite lane before it hit the approaching jeepney.

The police have been hunting the truck driver who fled the scene, while they have taken his helper into custody for investigation.

Jeepneys are the primary mode of transport for millions of Filipinos across the archipelago, especially in the countryside.
