6 injured as bridge collapses in northern Philippines

MANILA, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Six people were injured when a section of a new bridge in Isabela province in the northern Philippines collapsed, authorities said Saturday.

The provincial disaster risk reduction and management office said the bridge collapsed Thursday morning after a dump truck carrying boulders crossed it.

Construction of the bridge began in 2014 and was completed and opened for traffic on Feb. 1 this year.

The driver of the truck escaped after the incident, but police said he surrendered on Friday morning and is now in police custody.

In the meantime, the bridge has been closed to traffic since the cave-in, as further safety assessment and evaluation are ongoing.
