2 dead, 27 injured after bus falls into ravine in southern Philippines

MANILA, July 10 (Xinhua) -- A bus carrying students fell into a ravine in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines on Thursday, killing two and injuring 27 others, authorities said.

Ronnie Villanueva, provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, said that the accident occurred at around 8 a.m. local time when the bus was en route to a military training camp.

Villanueva said a student died at the scene, while an elderly victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital. 27 others suffered from various injuries.

An initial police investigation revealed that the bus brake failed while it was negotiating a descending curve on the road, causing it to jump off the cliff.

The college students headed to the camp for a program aimed at preparing them for service in the armed forces in the event of emergencies, and for reservists and potential officers.
